New cabinet minister objects to Bristol Airport expansion
20.05.10
Cabinet minister Liam Fox has written to North Somerset Council asking it to turn down Bristol Airport's £150-million expansion plans – and sent a copy to the Transport Secretary, the Evening Post reports. Given that any approval of the plans will have to be referred to the secretary of state for communities and local government because there is an element of development in the green belt, we hope he wrote to that minister too !
The North Somerset MP, who was appointed Defence Secretary last week, says he has been inundated with calls and e-mails since it emerged officials had recommended the scheme is approved. In a letter to council leader Nigel Ashton, he warns the proposals will make existing problems with traffic congestion around the airport, which is part of his constituency, far worse.
A copy of the letter will land on the desk of Dr Fox's Conservative colleague Phillip Hammond, the new Transport Secretary who will be responsible for drafting government policy on regional airports.
