Couple ‘too old’ for plane exit row
10.04.10
An elderly couple who paid extra for seats in the exit row on a flight were told at check-in they could not sit there - because they were too old - the Mirror reports. Marion Webb, 77, and husband Derek, 79, had paid an additional £100 for extra leg room on top of the £2,360 cost of a trip to Egypt with Thomson Airways. However, when they arrived at Bristol Airport, staff said they could not have the exit seats because the pair would not be able to operate the exit door in an emergency.
The couple, of Stockwood, Bristol, told the newspaper that they were ‘hurt, humiliated and angry’. Mrs Webb said: ‘We told the lady at the check-in desk we had already been allocated our seats online. She said, 'Yes, I know, but you are too old to have exit seats'.’ Thomson apologised but said staff followed CAA rules on passengers seated at exits. When we checked these we could not find an age limit though.
