Balloon festival hit by Bristol Airport fears

A planned mass ascent of around 140 hot air balloons marking the start of the 30th Bristol International Balloon Fiesta was scrapped yesterday after high winds raised concerns that they could stray in to the flight path of Bristol Airport, six miles away. The festival is one of world's biggest ballooning events, with more than 500,000 spectators attending sessions that take place over the weekend.
Tens of thousands of spectators gathered to watch the annual spectacle take off at 06:00 at Ashton Court. However, a decision was taken to tether rather than take off, as the wind would have blown the balloons towards Bristol Airport. A second mass ascent at 18:00 did take place, however, after the high winds eased.
