Bristol Airport is to lose it New York link. Continental Airlines will stop its daily transatlantic service to New York from November 7, the airline announced yesterday, with the airport blaming significant increases in Air Passenger Duty (APD), combined with the current weakness of the pound, for placing 'disproportionate pressure on long-haul routes from regional airports'.
Since its introduction in May 2005 the airline has carried 400,000 passengers on the Bristol to New York route. No other airlines at any airport in the South West or Wales operate a direct scheduled service to the US.
Aviation director at Bristol Airport, Shaun Browne, said: ‘We are disappointed with this news, having worked hard alongside Continental to make this route a success over the last five years. We will be working hard to explore ways to fill the gap left by Continental when it ceases operating the service.’
Passengers with a booking post November 7 will be contacted direct by Continental and offered alternative travel options or a refund.
