Jet2 threaten Blackpool Airport with legal action
04.11.10
Budget airline Jet2 has threatened Blackpool Airport with High Court action, the Gazette reports The row between the two companies reached new heights after Jet2 branded the airport's plans to close at 21:00 ‘unlawful’, and claimed airport management plans were designed to ‘interfere’ with their services to Ireland and Europe.
As reported yesterday, flights due to land after 21:00 have had to be diverted to Manchester, with passengers bussed back to Blackpool, after the airport said it was no longer prepared to provide ground staff and emergency services for late night flights. Airport boss Paul Rankin said Jet2 had refused to apply for an extension of the airport's opening hours which would allow late night planes to land at Blackpool.
A spokesman for Jet2 told the newspaper: ‘We have read with surprise and disappointment the comments made by Blackpool Airport. Jet2 is and has always been totally committed to Blackpool. For the last four-and-a-half years the airport has been one of Jet2's important bases and we plan to continue operating from the airport for many years to come.'
‘In the last month, for reasons only known to them, the owners of the airport have sought to introduce restrictions that seem to be designed to interfere with the service we provide to our customers. We believe these restrictions are entirely contrary to the terms of the agreement we have with the airport and therefore unlawful.'
‘Unless the owners of Blackpool Airport back down, we intend to apply to the High Court this week to obtain an order which will provide a long term solution and will protect our rights and customers' services.’
