Passengers down 0.7% at Birmingham Airport
25.11.08
Birmingham Airport passengers were down by 0.7 percent in October compared to the same month last year. However, with other UK airports including Manchester and Gatwick reporting a drop in passenger numbers of around 10 percent, the midlands hub is happy with its performance.
Nationally the number of passengers travelling through Britain’s airports is 6 percent down last month. Peter Vella, Birmingham Airport’s business development director, said they were doing far better than any other airport in the country (although Bristol Airport reported passengers up 0.4% earlier this week).
While October’s figures were 'fractionally down', Mr Vella said that he believes this was just a ‘blip’ and is expecting a positive figure in November. He said: ‘For the financial year to date our passenger figures are already up 4.3 percent up while all other airports are down.'
Paul Kehoe, the airport’s new chief executive officer, said: ‘Recession pressures have clearly exerted an affect on the airport but with the latest statistics indicating an average fall in passenger numbers across all UK airports of around 6 percent last month. However, Birmingham continues to perform well.’
