Birmingham Airport parking improvements unveiled

Birmingham Airport is spending £2 million upgrading its car parking in a bid to stop gridlock as motorists drop off passengers. The upgrades, which centre around a drop and go area next to airport terminals 1 and 2 for dropping off air travellers, have been adapted to keep traffic flowing.
The airport had to make changes to what used to be the outdoor short-stay car park after it was ordered to stop people using the traditional set-down lanes outside its two terminals following the failed terrorism attack at Glasgow Airport last June. The airport's short-stay car parks have now become a permanent ‘drop and go’ facility, costing £1 to park for 20 minutes and a further £3 for every 15 minutes after that.
Richard Gill, Birmingham Airport's Head of Development, said the first phase of the adaptations will be complete by the end of this week and will include an extra 79 spaces, as well as special bays for mini-buses and disabled drivers. In addition all of the car park’s parking bays have also been redesigned to run at angles in a bid to make it easier for passengers to come and go.
Drivers picking up passengers are told to use the multi-storey car parks, which cost £1 per 30 minutes and £3.30 per hour. Or they can use the long-stay car park free for up to an hour, but its location means they will have to also catch a shuttle bus. Another option for drivers who expect a delay while passengers arrive or who got to the airport early is to use the new waiting in the long stay car park and move to the multi-storey car park once they know their passengers have arrived.
