In 2009 Birmingham Airport will celebrate its 70th birthday, and with record passengers in August the airport has never been busier.
July 2008 saw the highest number of passenger arrivals of any July on record and a 7.5% overall increase in scheduled and charter flight passengers compared to 2007. Then last month the airport had its busiest ever month.
One of the airport's busiest scheduled routes to Larnaca in eastern Cyprus saw an increase of 115%, with figures for UK tourist arrivals in Cyprus hitting 110,736 in January to March 2008 compared to 108,542 over the same period in 2007. A spokesman said Birmingham Airport is sending ever more Britons to explore this magical Mediterranean isle.
