Big Birmingham Airport drugs find
07.08.08
A passenger who arrived at Birmingham Airport on a flight from Lagos in Nigeria on Sunday was arrested on suspicion of attempting to smuggle half a kilo of cocaine into the UK, the Solihull Times reports. The man, 37-year-old Gideon Ikwe, a Nigerian national, has been charged under the Customs and Excise Management Act 1979 and was remanded in custody to appear in court in Manchester.
The cocaine had an estimated value of £20,000 but this would have doubled or even trebled once 'cut' by drug dealers. Steve Roper, detection manager for the UK Borders Agency, told the newspaper: ‘This is an excellent result. We hope it sends out a clear message, our approach is one of zero tolerance. Regional airports should not be seen as a soft touch.’
