Loganair cuts Dundee – Birmingham flights
02.10.08
Loganair is to cut the frequency of flights between Dundee and Birmingham Airport due to ‘disappointing’ passenger numbers, the Courier reports. The service, only launched in May under the Flybe banner, will be cut back from October 27, Loganair chairman Scott Grier told the newspaper.
There are currently three flights on weekdays between Dundee and Birmingham, with a single return flight on a Sunday. From October 27 there will only be two flights on Monday, Tuesday and Friday. An afternoon flight will be removed from Monday and Tuesday’s schedule, with the Friday morning rotation also cancelled.
Mr Grier said forward bookings for the route had been ‘disappointing’ and the step was necessary to ensure the long-term sustainability of the service. He said: ‘Our passenger traffic in June and July exceeded our expectations and we believed we had got off to an excellent start with our services to Belfast and Birmingham.'
‘As predicted, our Birmingham passenger carryings in August were a little depressed due to the holidays affecting what is essentially a business route. Regrettably passenger traffic did not pick up in September and our forward bookings for October and November have been disappointing. Consequently we are reducing frequency on the Birmingham route with effect from October 27.’
Mr Grier said the airline’s flights between Dundee and Belfast would be unaffected by the move and stressed the company’s continued commitment to the routes.
