01.10.08
A drugs smuggler who tried to bring 26 kilos of cannabis through Birmingham Airport has been jailed for 32 months, the Birmingham Mail reports.
Daniel Francis Hughes, of dual British / South African nationality, was arrested by officers from the UK Border Agency when they found the drugs hidden in his luggage. The 49-year-old from Cape Town pleaded guilty to attempting to smuggle the drugs worth £70,000 into the country and was jailed at Warwick Crown Court last Thursday.
John Theobald, senior investigating officer for HM Revenue & Customs, said: ‘We aim to protect society from drug smuggling and hope this sends out a clear message that our approach is one of zero tolerance.’
