Ryanair announce first Belfast City Airport routes
25.07.07
Ryanair is to begin flights in October from Belfast City Airport to three UK airports, in a move that will create 270 jobs. Europe's biggest budget airline will launch flights from Belfast to Liverpool, Glasgow and the East Midlands this winter, and promised routes to mainland Europe within the next year.
Ryanair, which already operates from City of Derry airport, said it would sell the first 10,000 tickets on the Belfast routes for £10, including taxes and charges. All three new routes launch on October 30.
The runway length at Belfast City Airport means that Ryanair's Boeing 737-800 189-seat aircraft will be permitted to carry just 140 passengers on outgoing flights, but can carry a full load on incoming services.
A Ryanair spokesman said that the company's expansion would not have any impact on its existing operations from City of Derry. Neither Ryanair nor City Airport representatives would be drawn on the terms of the financial deal they have agreed.
Ryanair's announcement comes as speculation mounts that fellow Irish airline Aer Lingus is about to select Belfast International as its new UK hub. Rival budget airline easyJet already operates from Belfast International.
