Aer Lingus wants Ryanair to sell its shares
23.09.11
The war of words between Aer Lingus and its near 30% shareholder Ryanair stepped up a notch, with the flag carrier asking its budget rival to sell its stake.
Ryanair wrote to Aer Lingus chairman Colm Barrington this week saying ‘shareholder value had been destroyed’, calling for a €110 million (£96 million) special dividend. But Mr Barrington ‘totally rejected’ the claim that Ryanair and other shareholders were ‘continually ignored’, adding: ‘One of the greatest concerns we hear from shareholders relates to Ryanair's shareholding and its impact on the company's options and value. We welcome your statements [last week] that Ryanair would be prepared to dispose of its share in Aer Lingus.’
