Belfast City Airport given permission to expand
18.10.08
Belfast City Airport could be allowed to operate up to an extra 3,000 scheduled flights a year under changes to planning restrictions announced yesterday. An extra 500,000 passengers will be able to use the airport each year, however, it will be subjected to tighter regulations on noise and activity levels.
The Department of Environment has increased the airport's 'seats for sale' limit from 1.5m to 2m. It has also set a cap on the number of flights at 48,000 per year, up from 45,000. However, this now includes non-scheduled flights such as private jets and other non-commercial aircraft. These flights were previously not counted towards to the previous cap figure.
The airport will also be required to set up a forecasting and scrutiny system, and install noise and track keeping equipment as part of a new radar system to provide detailed information on noise and flight patterns. Operating hours are to remain limited between 06:30 and 21:30.
