Passengers to top 6m at Belfast Airport

Belfast International Airport is heading towards a record of 6 million passengers this year, according to John Doran, the airport's chief executive. He gave the figure at a Press conference held to mark the launch of Aer Lingus' Heathrow service on Monday.
Mr Doran said that with Aer Lingus expecting to handle 500,000 people on its new nine routes from Aldergrove, and growth from other airlines operating at the airport, total passenger numbers were expected to increase from 5.25 million last year to 6 million in 2008.
Over the past five years the number of direct services to international destinations served from Belfast International had risen from just one - Amsterdam - to 36. But Mr Doran said that, despite the recent impressive growth, there is no indication that the market was reaching saturation point and that it could grow still further.
Passenger numbers are also on the increase at Belfast City Airport, which handled 2.2 million passengers last year. With Ryanair launching flights from the airport, it could even rival the growth rate at its bigger Belfast rival.
