Belfast Airport drug smuggler jailed
10.09.09
A mother who tried to smuggle around £46,000 of cocaine and cannabis into Northern Ireland via Belfast International Airport has been jailed for two years. Unemployed Leanne Elizabeth Barber, 26, from Rosskeen Park, Londonderry, was arrested by Customs officers at the airport as she got off a flight from Amsterdam in July 2007. She was found to have concealed five small packages of cocaine internally, and was also carrying cannabis in her bags.
The 2.8oz (80.4g) of cocaine had an estimated street value of around £16,000 and 8lb (3.6kg) of herbal cannabis contained in her baggage amounted to around £30,000. Belfast Judge Philip Babington gave Ms Barber, who has a 12-year-old son and nine-month-old daughter, a two-year sentence followed by 18 months' probation during which she must participate in a drug rehabilitation course.
