A 65-year-old man was caught trying to bring cocaine worth £1.1m into Scotland via Aberdeen Airport, a court heard this week.
John Onwuchekwa was stopped as he attempted to go through the green channel at the airport in June. The High Court in Glasgow heard that customs officials became suspicious because the suit carrier smelled of a substance which is often used by smugglers to conceal the smell of cocaine, understood to be coffee.
The Nigerian had arrived from Togo in Africa, via Paris, and almost 2 kg of very pure cocaine was found in his suit carrier. He was being paid £3,000 for his part in the operation. Sentence on Mr. Onwuchekwa, who admitted being concerned in supplying drugs, was deferred until next month for background reports.
Lord Hodge told a weeping Mr. Onwuchekwa: 'You have pleaded guilty to a very serious offence - importing a substantial quantity of drugs into this country. It is almost inevitable that you will face a substantial custodial sentence.'
