Aberdeen Airport boss slams transport links
21.06.08
The Managing Director of Aberdeen Airport has branded the North-east’s transport network a ‘disgrace’, the Evening Express reports. Kevin Brown made the comment as he pleaded with transport bosses for improvements to boost the North-east.
Mr Brown told Nestrans, the regional transport organisation, that delays getting to and from the airport tarnished the city’s image. He said: ‘It is easy to get people to come here, but once they get here we need to make it as easy for them to move around once they leave the airport.'
‘We can make improvements to runways, but we need better roads, better bus services. I know there are people in Stonehaven who choose to fly from Edinburgh. I think that’s a disgrace.’
Airport owner BAA wants a bus lane from the A96 Aberdeen - Inverness road. It is also considering closing Kirkhill Road at the junction of Forties Road – a rat-run – to non-airport traffic at peak times.
Mr Brown also hit out at a lack of airport hotels after bids for two hotels and a large car park at the airport were refused by the city council a week ago. He said: ‘One of the key markets I would like to bring here is people from Germany. The reason they won’t come here is that there are not the hotels.’
