Flights hit by Norway strikes
21.05.08
Strike action at a number of Norway’s airports is expected to disrupt travellers’ plans today following the cancellation of a number of UK flights yesterday. The absence of around 400 civil aviation employees has forced 12 airport closures due to insufficient staff to respond to possible emergencies.
The dispute centres on a pay dispute but the civil aviation authority Avinor and unions have not held any meetings since talks on Friday failed. About 330 flights were cancelled yesterday including seven scheduled to fly from Aberdeen Airport to Stavanger and three to Bergen, plus two more from Bergen to the Granite City. It was unclear how many flights will be affected today.
Eastern Airways and Wideroe fly between Aberdeen and Norway. Speaking about yesterday’s cancellations an Eastern Airways spokesman said: ‘The closure of Stavanger Airport along with 11 other airports in Norway due to strike action left us with no alternative but to cancel Stavanger services from Aberdeen.’ The airline also cancelled its daily from Newcastle Airport to Stavanger, which only launched last week.
