City Star cut jobs at Aberdeen Airport but say US route still on track
12.12.07
City Star Airlines, the airline behind plans for Aberdeen Airport's scheduled transatlantic service to Houston, Texas has said the service will go ahead despite suspending another route and cutting its staff at the airport. City Star Airlines has postponed the launch of its service to Alesund in Norway and cut 15 jobs after a recent accident at the airport damaged a plane.
A company spokeswoman said it has postponed its service to Alesund in Norway after one of its Dornier aircraft was hit on the ground by aircraft stairs driven by an employee of handling company SGS. She said the damage will cost around six figures to repair and take at least six months.
The 15 posts would go due to the costs of the accident, but this will not impact on the Houston route due to start next month. City Star is due to start the direct link with the Texan oil capital of Houston next month, but would-be passengers are still unable to book flights on the firm's website. Aberdeen Airport does not have a date for the launch and speculation is mounting that it may be delayed.
City Star plans to use a leased 50-seat Boeing 757 200ER jet on the new route. The airline was formed in March, 2003, and was backed by investors in the UK and Iceland. It currently flies to Bergen, Kristiansund, Oslo and Stavanger. Companies have long called for a direct route between the two cities to help business links between the two oil cities.
