Aberdeen Airport passengers drop for second month

Aberdeen Airport suffered its second successive fall in passenger numbers last month, but still recorded its busiest year yet in 2007. An airport spokesman said the monthly decreases had been caused by the loss of certain routes this winter.
Airport owner BAA released figures yesterday showing that more than 3.4million passengers used the hub last year - 7.9% more than 2006. However, a year-on-year fall by 2% in December means that for the second month running numbers have fallen. For the first time in almost four years, monthly year-on-year figures dropped in November by 2.3%.
An Aberdeen Airport spokesman said: 'We lost the Aberdeen to Liverpool route in October which is why the numbers have been down for November and December last year compared with 2006, but overall for 2007 we have had an increase of 7.9% in passenger growth, which no other major airport in the country can boast.'
Despite the drops in November and December, last month, there was a 3% increase in international flights. Over the last 12 months was a 6.5% rise in passengers numbers between Aberdeen and London.
The airport spokesman added that talks were still taking place to find a replacement airline to take over the Aberdeen to Gatwick route, which is being abandoned by British Airways at the end of March after it transfers its Houston flights to Heathrow.
