03.08.07
A barman who robbed the pub he worked at of £2500 was caught after he bought a £189 air ticket using 189 £1 coins, the Daily Record newspaper reports. A suspicious check-in clerk at Aberdeen Airport called police and Neil MacKay was arrested as he tried to change 500 pound coins into Norwegian currency to add to his one-way flight to Stavanger.
Mr. MacKay took the money and had left a note at Findlay's pub in Inverness, saying 'Sorry'. He then took a taxi to Aberdeen airport, paying the driver £100 for the journey, Inverness Sheriff Court heard.
The 37 year old alcoholic, who lives and works at the Highlander Hotel in Newtonmore, Invernessshire, admitted theft. His sentence was deferred for reports.
