Aberdeen Airport barrier fee plan scrapped
02.03.08
Aberdeen Airport has abandoned controversial barrier charges set to be introduced on April 1. BAA had planned a barrier system that would have seen airport taxis pay £1 every time they picked up passengers from the terminal. It sparked outrage and lightning-strike action among taxi drivers.
BAA said the charges were necessary to pay for increased security since the attempted terrorist attack at Glasgow airport. Drivers claimed the charges would cost them £10,500 a year. Rainbow taxis resigned from their role controlling the airport cabs, as of March 31. But the airport and taxi drivers have reached an agreement after talks.
However, although the barrier fee will not be introduced, permit charges for drivers are still set to rise from £34 to £60.
